Joni Mitchell's longtime friend has filed for conservatorship due to the singer-songwriter's alleged incapacity. A denial that Mitchell is unresponsive was issued on Mitchell's website within hours.

According to Mitchell's official website, the Canadian-born singer Leslie Morris, "comprehends, she's alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected." The statement goes on to say the reclusive Mitchell is "is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight."

The statement maintains that conservatorship "simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority - in the absence of 24-hour doctor care - to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital."

Morris, a friend of Mitchell's for 44 years, filed the petition to become the 71-year-old Grammy winner's legal guardian, stating Mitchell is unable to care for herself, according to TMZ. The conservatorship would not include control over Mitchell's finances, according to the Toronto Star

In the filing, Dr. Paul Vespa checked a box indicating Mitchell was unable to participate in her medical care. "At this time (Mitchell) remains unconscious and unable to make any responses, and is therefore unable to provide for any of her personal needs," states the petition.

As HNGN previously reported, Mitchell was hospitalized on March 31 after an emergency call was placed for an "unconscious female" at the singer's Los Angeles home. The Hall of Famer has been in UCLA Medical Center's ICU since her initial hospitalization with an undisclosed ailment. Mitchell reportedly suffers from Morgellons disease.

Mitchell spoke to Billboard in 2014 about her illness: "I've had a very full life. I don't miss much of anything. I can't sing anymore - don't miss it. I can't play anymore - don't miss it."
