A remote island in southern Japan is either your idea of paradise or your worst nightmare. It all depends on how you feel about cats - not just cute internet cats made into snarky memes. We're talking a platoon of fur.

The mile-long island of Aoshima is overrun with cats that outnumber humans six to one, according to NBC News. The cats were originally brought to the fishing village to deal with mice, but they stayed and grew quite plentiful. The island population is 142 - 22 humans, 120 cats.

In 1945, the island held 900 people, but after World War II, most of the inhabitants of Aoshima went to the mainland in search of work. According to NBC, the handful of folks who stayed are mainly pensioners.

There are no restaurants or tourist shops on what has come to be known as Cat Island, but that doesn't keep feline fanatics away.

"There is a ton of cats here, then there was this sort of cat witch who came out to feed the cats which was quite fun," 27-year-old Makiko Yamasaki told NBC News. "So I'd want to come again."
