A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed, along with three other people, at a house in Cleveland after a gunman shot at them on Friday, police said Saturday, who are currently working to find the suspect, whose motive has not yet been determined.

The pregnant woman, her 9-year-old daughter and toddler son had stumbled onto the murder scene when the shooting occurred, NBC News reported. While the daughter was left wounded, the toddler remained unharmed.

Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, a 41-year-old Sherita Johnson, accompanied by her daughter and 2-year-old son, drove up to their house on the city's east side. Johnson, who was 28 weeks pregnant, then sent her daughter inside the house to fetch some clothing when the horrific murder scene transpired.

"At that time, a male armed with a handgun ran toward the 9-year-old and fired a shot, grazing the girl in the chest," police said in a statement Saturday.

The unidentified gunman, whom the girl described as wearing a mask, then rushed outside, where he shot and killed the girl's pregnant mother. The toddler, who was in the back seat of the car, was not injured.

Three other victims, a 17-year-old girl and two men, aged 19 and 60, were also killed in the tragic Friday night shooting inside the home. Their identities were not immediately released, according to The Guardian.

"Only an animal would do something like this to another human being," Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams told the Northeast Ohio Media Group.

The 9-year-old girl is expected to survive.
