The Chicago Tribune gives "Son Of God" 2.5 stars out of 4:

"Like the much-criticized TV series it is culled from, the film's main aim is to be inoffensive, and with multiple directors and screenwriters, they at least manage that. Parts of the story emphasized by the Catholic Church (the redemption of Dismas, on the cross next to Christ) and that inspired 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' (the spear of Longinus delivers the coup de grace) are touched on. And unlike Gibson's bloody blockbuster, this loving, forgiving son comes back long enough to remind us of why the religion, founded in his name, has endured."

The Washington Post rates the film 2.5 stars out of 4:

"Its narrative is too simplistic, its drama too inert for 'Son of God' to be taken seriously as art; as iconography, it exists somewhere on the continuum between Warner Sallman's 1940 'Head of Christ' and Ted Neeley's groovy blue-eyed savior in 'Superstar.' But Downey and Burnett clearly mean for their film to make an impact not as an aesthetic experience, but as a spiritual one. And their tireless evangelism for their movie has worked: More than half-a-million advance tickets reportedly have been sold to church groups across the country."

Rotton Tomatoes audience users certified the film fresh with an 84 percent rating:

"I got what I expected, and that is good enough for me. It's obvious that the footage wasn't originally made for the big screen, and it doesn't illicit raw emotion from its audience, but the acting was still impressive. Despite the small flaws, 'Son of God' will do well at the box office, and will change lives," one user wrote.
