The rule of "Beauty and the Beast" ended after about a fortnight as "The Boss Baby" arrived. The Fox-DreamWorks animated movie hit 3,773 theaters on Friday.

According to Variety, "The Boss Baby" earned $15.5 million on its opening day. On the other hand, Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" earned just over $13 million on its opening Friday from 4,210 theaters.

Interestingly, one of the trailers had a "Beauty and the Beast" reference, with the Boss Baby playing with toy versions of Lumiere and Cogsworth.  Apart from US and Canada, "The Boss Baby" earned $21.2 million in other territories for a worldwide gross of $36.7 million during the opening. 

The movie was previously projected to gross around $30 million in its opening weekend. However, keeping in mind the development, now the weekend projections has been increased to $50 million.

Alec Baldwin lends his voice for the character The Boss Baby Templeton. Other voiceovers include Tobey Maguire as an adult Tim, the narrator, Steve Buscemi as Francis E. Francis, Jimmy Kimmel as Ted Templeton and Lisa Kudrow as Janice Templeton. 

"The Boss Baby" is loosely based on the 2010 picture book of the same name written and illustrated by Marla Frazee. The 3D computer-animated comedy film has been produced by DreamWorks Animation, directed by Tom McGrath and written by Michael McCullers.

According to Deadline, the teaser trailer for "The Boss Baby" was launched online back on October 17, and in theaters on November. 4. The trailer became ranked number one online in DWA's history with over 100 million views.

The plot follows a baby who is a secret agent in the secret war between babies and puppies. "The Boss Baby" opened with Paramount's "Ghost in the Shell," which in comparison earned $7.7 million from 3,440 theaters on its opening day.  The Scarlett Johansson starrer has been criticized for 'whitewashing' the character.
