Batgirl could get its own standalone movie very soon. Interestingly, MCU's "The Avengers" helmer Joss Whedon will jump boats to DCEU to further develop the project.

According to Variety, Joss Whedon is in negotiations to write, direct and produce the upcoming Batgirl movie. The movie will add another heroine to Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe.

Toby Emmerich, president of Warner Bros. Pictures will oversee the Batgirl project. He will be associated with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. Apart from Whedon, no other producer has been appointed yet.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, despite being one of the most popular superheroes in the DC world, Batgirl is yet to make a big screen standalone debut. The upcoming project is likely to feature other characters from Gotham as well.

In the comics, Batgirl was introduced in 1967 as Barbra Gordon in "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!" She is the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon.

The character was written by Gardner Fox and drew by artist Carmine Infantino. Batgirl can be often seen working together with Batman, Robin and Nightwing/Dick Grayson.

Batgirl will be the second female superhero in Warner Bros. DCEU apart from Wonder Woman. The character was previously played by the late Yvonne Craig in the ABC's "Batman" in 1967-68 and then by Alicia Silverstone opposite George Clooney in "Batman & Robin".

Whedon is definitely a good choice to take the helm of Batgirl standalone movie. He has already written MCU's "The Avengers" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron". He has also created popular TV series including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly," "Dollhouse," and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Apart from Batgirl, Warner Bros are also developing a "Suicide Squad" sequel and "Gotham City Sirens." Also underway are the much anticipated "The Batman," starring Ben Affleck, a "Shazam" movie and a Black Adam spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Flash and Cyborg related projects.
