Art director Joel MacMillan officially shared some of what he knows about BioWare's move on designing a new alien race for "Mass Effect Andromeda." While the studio has remained silent about the Kett's history, MacMillan did give some details about the importance in designing an empathetic alien race.

In a recent interview, MacMillan noted that even though the player may come into contact with some Kett, the developer wanted to make sure that players could still be able to associate with these new aliens.

"As much as we intended to make them look fresh or different or alien, you're always going to want to associate with them in any way possible. There's a really odd disconnect with trying to associate with an alien that is completely naked in front of you," MacMillan said.

Creating the Ketts

MacMillan also said that the team's goal was to be able to create an alien race that is foreboding, but never to the point where it is going to be ugly. "We have a lot of side-stories, we have a lot of stories we want to convey regarding this alien race so, despite how fearful and scary they are, you still would want to be able to have opportunities to show them in an empathetic way," MacMillan explained.

The Ketts have a more organic feel

BioWare took a more organic path towards developing the alien races and incorporating them in Andromeda, with MacMillan specifically citing the Kett's armor, with some organic materials being used for not just what the Kett wore but what they also used in their architecture as well.
