The new cast has been announced. Charlie Hunnam, the lead character of the first film, will not be returning, citing schedule conflict and "non-creative" decisions as reasons.

Pacific Rim 2, which will be release in February of 2018, is helmed by Steven S. DeKnight, whose claim to fame includes Smallville and Daredevil. Pacific Rim 2 is produced by Guillermo del Toro, Femi Oguns, Jon Jashni, Mary Parent, and Thomas Tull.

The first film Pacific Rim, which was released in 2013, was directed by del Toro and starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, and Charlie Day. It was set in the future with Earth is at war with the monsters called Kaiju. It fared well in the box office, grossing $411 million worldwide.

Cinemablend stated that the sequel will be totally different from the first film. The upcoming movie is rumored to pick up a few years after the first film and focuses more on the monstrous Kaiju, the giant creatures from another dimension. It is presumed that after they were banished to the bottom of the ocean, they have come back. That means the Earth will again need the Jaeger, the massive mechanical suit designed to fight the Kaiju.

Not much is known about the movie's official story. Some fans, however, are excited already-hoping for a bigger and more action-packed Jaeger-Kaiju battle scenes.
