As much as they are featured prominently throughout the entire "Attack on Titan" series, very little is actually known about the franchise's ever-present, nigh-overpowered titans. With seemingly an endless number of them and an equally endless appetite for human flesh, the titans are one thing that definitely makes "Attack on Titan" as intense as it is.

However, there is very little that is known about the titans. In fact, during the first season of the anime, there were absolutely no explanations at all that were given to the titans' origins. In the upcoming second season of the anime, however, there is a very good chance that some light will be shed that would finally give fans some much-needed information about the titans.

Though the complete rundown of the titan mythos has not been done yet in the manga, there have been a number of pertinent chapters that were related to a handful of information about the massive man-eating creatures. Of course, since the upcoming second season of the "Attack on Titan" anime is set to follow the manga closely, there is a good chance that the anime will explore these little titan tidbits as well.

One of the most notable points of information about the titans lies in the possibility that they were not originally titans at all. Rather, they were people once who, at some point, turned into the flesh-eating beasts. This was prominently shown in the events leading up to the Battle of Castle Utgard Arc, where one of the protagonists, who went back to his old village for a visit, ended up coming face to face with a titan which recognized him by name and face.

Of course, the intricate arc in the manga that featured the Survey Corps attempting to topple the regime in Wall Sina is one that is also set to shed light on the past of the titans. Though the arc itself was arguably slow-paced and somewhat anticlimactic for the most part, the information about the titans, as well as the logic behind titan shifters like series protagonist Eren, was well worth the commitment for fans.

Indeed, from the manga so far, it seems like two very prominent things could be determined from the titans. One, titans were human once, and two, the only difference between a regular titan and a titan shifter is that regular titans fully absorb their human bodies. Unlike titan shifters, who maintain their personality and wits while in titan form, humans who turn into titans immediately turn feral.

The upcoming second season is set to bring a lot of new things to the table for fans of the franchise. Indeed, it is all but certain that titans, at least, will be a tad less mysterious for readers after the second season is done.

Though no release date has been announced, rumors abound that "Attack on Titan" Season 2 is set to be released later this year or early 2017.
