"Boruto: Naruto the Movie" was so successful during its theatrical run that talks of a possible second installment immediately started emerging. While most of the fanfare about the second "Boruto" movie were simply rumors, there were some speculations that truly had credibility.

Take "Naruto" creator Masashi Kishimoto's recent interview with Anime News Network, for example. During the interview, the issue of a possible expansion of the "Boruto" universe came up.

"There is nothing firmly in the works at this time. Just that there is always the possibility," Kishimoto said, according to The International Business Times.

Of course, with the undeniable success of the first "Boruto" movie, it only makes sense that a second one would be made to take advantage of fans' interest.

However, it seems like the continuation of Boruto's story on the big screen will have to wait, since 2016 is set aside for the release of yet another Naruto spinoff, "The True Legend of Itachi."

The 2016 "Naruto" spinoff is set to be split into two parts, with the first titled "The True Legend of Itachi: Glory" and the next being called "The True Legend of Itachi: Dark Knight." The first feature film will focus on the exploits of Itachi when he was a young ninja, while the second part will portray his eventual descent into darkness, reported Cross Map.

The first installment of Itachi's story is set to be released on March 3, 2016.

With 2016 being set aside for Itachi, it does seem like fans of Boruto will indeed be required to do a lot of waiting. However, fans of the runaway 2015 release still have something very big to look forward to.

After all, Boruto is set to have his own manga. While Kishimoto will not be penning and drawing the panels of Boruto's manga adaptation, he will nonetheless serve as an adviser to Ukyo Kodachi and Mikio Ikemoto, who are tasked with the creation of the "Boruto" manga.

Thus, fans of the franchise could rest assure that Boruto's story will take form under the supervision of the man behind the "Naruto" universe himself. For most anime and manga fans, such a thing is already something substantial.
