While the release date of the third season has been significantly delayed, possibly to make way for new manga material, the "Tokyo Ghoul:re" manga, which is most probably the material that will be utilized for the third season, continues to progress. If the third season does follow the manga this time around, it might very well be the best "Tokyo Ghoul" anime yet.

What really irked fans of the manga about the anime's second season, "Tokyo Ghoul Root A," was the fact that it diverged significantly from its source material. Though the final scene of the second season, which involves Kaneki about to face off with legendary CCG investigator Kishou Arima, was teased in the anime, the actual battle between the two was never shown. For fans, ending the season in that way proved anti-climactic.

Considering that the third season seems to be waiting for more manga material, the fact that the battle between Kaneki and Arima was never animated might actually be a blessing in disguise. For one, it would actually enable the third season to start in line with the manga's events.

In the manga, the battle between Kaneki and Arima was a spectacle to behold, as the half-ghoul desperately, furiously attacks the investigator. Ultimately, however, Kaneki was savagely defeated, resulting in the half-ghoul teetering on the verge of insanity and losing his memory. Despite his defeat, Kaneki nonetheless manages to impress Arima, whose weapon was damaged by the half-ghoul's attacks.

If the third season does follow the manga, it is highly probable that the first episodes will deal with the aftermath of Kaneki's defeat, as well as his subsequent defection to the CCG. Doing so would set the series up for a really epic finale.

Part of this is due to the relationship between Kaneki, who is now living under the pseudonym of Haise Sasaki, and the man who defeated him, Arima. It should be noted that in the manga, Arima was the man who ultimately helped Kaneki/Sasaki get over his depression while incarcerated in the CCG. He also served as Kaneki's mentor, even sparring with him at times.

Through the course of the manga, Kaneki and Arima began to develop a close bond, akin to that of a father and son. However, in the most recent manga release, Kaneki, spurred on by his feelings for Hinami, a ghoul who shared his past and who was incarcerated in the CCG, decided to betray the organization.

Considering that Arima and his team are actively fighting in the area, Kaneki and Hinami's escape might very well culminate in an intense rematch between the half-ghoul and the legendary investigator. Of course, since Kaneki is far stronger now than before, his rematch with Arima would probably end quite differently from their last battle.

If the third season of the anime does follow the events of the manga, the rematch between Kaneki and Arima would make for a really satisfying conclusion for the anime. After all, it would practically take the series full circle, since it was their fight that ultimately brought their fates together.

Of course, such a thing could only happen if the producers do decide to stay faithful to the manga. Considering the poor fan reviews of "Tokyo Ghoul Root A," however, it is possible that the producers would finally realize that it is high time that they stick to the source material.
