OnePlus last updated its operating system in December, and fans will be delighted to know that the latest OS version has already started rolling out. There are no radical changes, but the new version introduces key features as well as bug fixes and other OS improvements.

Dubbed OxygenOS 2.2.1, the update focused on improving the camera software. The system now allows RAW file support, an improvement that is expected to take advantage of the camera technology in OnePlus handsets. For instance, OnePlus 2 has a 13-megapixel sensor and could take a 50-megapixel photo and support for slow motion mode. The capability to take images in RAW format will allow users to have more options when editing photos.

Aside from the camera upgrade, the latest OS iteration also fixed some errors such as the occasional image corruption error when using the native OxygenOS camera app. It is important to note that OnePlus has already released a software patch to address camera errors reported by many users. The difference in the latest fix is that it is part of the OS update.

Users who have updated their handsets will also find that their devices have significantly improved Bluetooth and Ultra-SIM compatibilities as well as the OnePlus device's roaming feature. OxygenOS 2.2.1 also includes GMS 3.0 upgrade a security patch update and Romanian language support. There is no word yet from OnePlus whether the update will also address other performance complaints such as freezing and lag issues or whether it will improve the device's battery life.

The latest OS will be incremental, which means it will take time for OnePlus owners around the world to update their phones. Users can check if their phones are ready for the over-the-air update by going to the About Phone entry in the Settings menu. Check System Updates and a message should indicate if the update is already available for download. You can also opt to manually install 2.2.1 update.

After the OS update, OnePlus is prepping for its next milestone in the second quarter of this year, when it will release OnePlus 3 in the U.S. The device will be available as an unlocked smartphone.
