Ridley Scott is in the early stages of negotiations to be signed on as a director for the film adaptation of the 1968 Patrick McGoohan British TV series "The Prisoner," according to Deadline.

The Universal Studios project has been in the works for quite some time now, with the likes of "The Usual Suspects" writer Christopher McQuarrie and William Monahan of "The Departed" fame penning drafts for the film. The feature is being made by Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass Films.

The plot of the original TV series revolved around a secret government agent who is abducted shortly after he hands in his resignation and finds himself trapped in an isolated village. The 17-episode series followed his journey as he tries to escape the idyllic village while being hunted by those who want to uncover his secrets, according to Screen Crush.

"The Martian" director is currently working on "Alien: Covenant," which is expected to start filming soon. "Alien: Covenant," a sequel to 2012's "Prometheus" and prequel to "Alien," is slated to hit theaters on Oct. 6, 2017.
