"Prometheus" may not have lived up the "Alien" prequel hype fans attached to it, but at least it was a visually stunning and thought-provoking film, if nothing else. While the 2012 blockbuster failed to fully connect with critics and audiences (a so-so $400 million at the worldwide box office), director Ridley Scott has said that he plans to move forward with "Prometheus 2" starting in January 2016.

But that's not all. Scott, who is currently doing promotion for "The Martian," said he plans to make as many as three more "Prometheus" films. Admittedly, it seems odd that Scott would devote so much time to a franchise audiences aren't exactly clamoring for. But when asked by FilmFutter if "Prometheus 2" will directly connect to "Alien," he responded with the following:

"Yes. But it won't be in the next one. It will be in the one after this one or maybe even a fourth film before we get back into the Alien franchise."

It's unknown if this will have any impact on Neill Blomkamp's planned "Alien 5" movie. But Scott's comments echo fellow legendary director James Cameron's plans to immerse himself in the "Avatar" world for the next decade or so. From a fan perspective, this is disappointing news. Movie goers want both iconic filmmakers to continue producing original work, but neither franchise is worth this type of investment.

Hopefully, Scott can right some of the wrongs that littered "Prometheus" in its follow up. It definitely sounds as if he knows where he wants to go with the series.

"The whole point of it is to explain the Alien franchise and to explain the how and why of the creation of the Alien itself. I always thought of the Alien as a kind of piece of bacterial warfare. I always thought that the original ship, which I call the Croissant, was a battleship, holding these biomechanoid creatures that were all about destruction."

We're definitely on the fence about this but I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.
