A 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked northeast Afghanistan and bordering areas of Pakistan early Saturday morning. The relatively strong quake struck shortly after midnight.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located 203.5 kilometres deep in the Ashkasham district of the northeastern Badakhshan province near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan and Tajikistan, according to U.S. Geological Survey.

Nearly a dozen injured people were admitted to the Jalalabad Civil Hospital, provincial officials told Pajhwok news agency. Some of them are reportedly in critical condition.

The Richter scale of the quake was recorded at 6.9 magnitude in Pakistan, local media reports said.

At least 47 people were injured in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in quake-related incidents, according to Dunya News. Provincial authorities declared an emergency in the province soon after the quake.

Strong tremors were felt in the northern part of India, including in the capital Delhi.

"Right now, we cannot say whether any damage (to life or property) has taken place. Anything in this regard can be said after we have all the details," an Indian official from Jammu and Kashmir's Meteorological department said, according to Livemint.

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake, struck on Oct. 26, killed more than 100 people in northeast Afghanistan. A powerful earthquake and series of aftershocks in Nepal killed nearly 9,000 people this year.
