A new bed designed to save people caught in an earthquake while they are sleeping has been causing a stir online.

Videos of several models of the bed have been making the rounds on YouTube, and many people have expressed more fear than delight at the proposal.

Although details of the design have been hard to come by, according to The Daily Mail, the idea is that the bed converts to a protective box. The video demonstrates that when the bed feels the ground shake, it opens up, dropping the mattress into a steel container.

Wenxi Wang, 66, has been credited with the idea. Wang obtained a patent for an earthquake-proof bed in 2010, according to The Next Web. Since then he has been working on an upgrade to his previous concept. One of the additions to the newer model has been the addition of storage space to hold supplies.

Media claims Wang was inspired after surviving two earthquakes himself, BuzzFeed News reports.

Although there has been no commercial release of the bed announced, the video shows several models and designs to appeal to a broad market.
