Stephen "Greg" Fisk, the newly elected Mayor of Juneau, Alaska, was found dead Monday afternoon at his home, according to police. He was 70.

Fisk's son called 911 at approximately 3:30 p.m. to report that he had found his father's body at his residence in Juneau. Authorities arrived at the scene to find Fisk, who defeated incumbent Merrill Sanford to become the Mayor of the Alaskan capital in October, according to KTVA.

The Juneau Police Department (JPD) are investigating Fisk's death, said JPD spokeswoman Erann Kalwara. "Juneau Police Department is aware of rumors that an assault occurred in connection with Fisk's death," Kalwara said in a statement. "Those rumors are speculation. Detectives are actively investigating facts of the incident and all evidence is being preserved and documented."

The cause of Fisk's death has not yet been determined, but the State Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release results of the autopsy "within several days," according to Kalwara.

Deputy Mayor Mary Becker, who will replace Fisk as the acting mayor as per state law, described Fisk's death as a "devastating" loss.

"He was a wonderful person and a friend and from the calls I've been receiving tonight, I'm not the only one who felt he was wonderful person and a good friend to Juneau," Becker said, according to KTUU. "It's so devastating to have this happen, it's basically unbelievable."

The Governor of Alaska, Bill Walker, expressed his condolences on Twitter.
