New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz announced that he will undergo season-ending surgery on his left calf, via Bleacher Report.

Cruz has been attempting to come back from his calf injury all season and hasn't played since Week 6 of 2014 when he tore his patellar tendon against the Philadelphia Eagles. "This hurts, mainly because I work so hard to come back from my patellar tendon surgery," said Cruz. "There are certain things that happen to your body that you just can't explain."

Cruz was reportedly expected to run routes on Saturday, but the Giants trainers and Cruz likely felt it was best to shut him down for the season and get the surgery. Cruz has three years left on his five-year contract and is owed $7.9 million, $7.4 million, and $8.4 million over the next three seasons. The Giants will likely try to restructure Cruz's contract, as he hasn't played over an entire year and now has missed almost a two whole seasons.

Cruz used his Twitter account to write, "Thank you to the real fans that understand how difficult this is and have faith in me and wish me a full recovery."

The Giants will continue to play Dwayne Harris at the slot receiver position down the stretch of the season. Harris had a big game on Sunday against the New England Patriots with six receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. The Giants are 5-5 after taking a tough 27-26 loss to the Patriots on Sunday but still sit in first place in the NFC East.
