European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called an emergency meeting of the Balkan and EU leaders Sunday to discuss the escalating migrant crisis in the western Balkan region.

Migrants and refugees heading to Germany and Austria have been using Slovenian and Croatian routes after Hungary sealed its borders.

The tiny Balkan nation Slovenia has been facing a huge surge in refugee numbers since Hungary closed its border with Croatia. More than 58,000 West Europe-bound migrants have arrived in Slovenia over the last week, reported Reuters.

Slovenian President Borut Pahor warned that the tiny Alpine nation will act on it own unless an acceptable solution comes out of the European Union's emergency meeting.

"Slovenia cannot become a pocket in which refugees would be stuck if the Austrian and German borders close, because the country could not handle that," Pahor said Saturday, according to Herald Extra.

Slovenia accused Croatia Friday of sending migrants across their shared border by the Sutla River.

"Croatia is sending migrants across the green border unannounced and in a disorganized manner, without compassion for fellow human beings. They deliberately send them towards the river, while trying to shift all the burden of responsibility onto Slovenia," Secretary of State for the Interior Bostjan Sefic said, according to Sputnik.

"The Croatian authorities did not try and stop them, or direct them to an appropriate place to cross the border," Sefic said. Slovenia authorities also released footage showing migrants being directed by Croatian authorities towards Slovenia.
