Do you sleep with your earrings on? Many people do, too! Fortunately, there is no medical data that says doing so can lead to deaths or diseases, but as skin specialists Dr. Marina Peredo explains, you should make it a habit to wear earrings - and other jewelry for the matter - that are always clean. Unclean jewelry can irritate the skin, which could then lead to rashes or blisters. "Metals that are added to gold and silver such as nickel can be extremely irritating to the skin," said Peredo via Self Magazine.

Still, it may be a good idea to remove earrings when you head to bed. For older women, or those on medication or suffering from a sleep condition, night sweats are fairly common, according to the National Health Services. "Perspiration can also cause a reaction between the jewelry and skin as well as the interaction of certain medications, jewelry and skin," Peredo added.

A study done by researchers at the University of Minnesota Medical Center revealed that constant friction of newly-pierced ears with unsterile posts may also lead to ear problems. If you've just gotten pierced ears, let it heal completely by taking your earrings off when you sleep.

Wearing big, heavy or detailed earrings will make sleeping quite uncomfortable as these can snag on the pillow, blanket, or your hair. Even as you're not wearing this to bed, these are the types of designs that can lead to elongated or sagging lobes, according to plastic surgeons via The Huffington Post. Unknown to a lot of people, the ear lobes are also prone to aging.

"The earlobe is an unusual body structure as it has skin on two sides. This makes it prone to water loss and sun exposure. Consequently daily moisturizers and sunblock with SPF 15 or higher will likely delay the aging process," said Dr. Edward Miranda in the report.

Lastly, wearing earrings to bed is one of the leading causes of damage to the jewelry, Peredo said. The gemstones could loosen or the prongs could wear out, so it would be best to keep this in the jewelry box at night and put it back on during the day.
