While wearing makeup and cosmetics can emphasize your best features and give you a fresh look, wearing it wrong can do the opposite and age you. Avoid these common beauty mistakes so you don't have to look older than your age:

1. Using too much foundation. "Too much can cake and discolor the skin, emphasizing the fine lines around your eyes and lips," said celebrity makeup artist George Eisdell, via Good Housekeeping. Experts advise avoiding foundation use altogether since it can dehydrate the skin, according to Cosmopolitan. Use this as a last resort to control shine and scale down the size of your pores.

2. Not doing touch-ups and clean-ups. Mascaras and liners can run and lipstick can fade after several hours of wear. Leaving it this way is not only a bad look, it's bad for the skin as the pigments settle, especially in the eye area. Take a few minutes to touch up.

3. Using glittery, shimmery or metallic makeup. Shiny eyeshadows can define wrinkles more, while metallic lipstick shades can dry your lips. Avoid formulas that have shimmer if you're above 25-years-old. "Formulas with shiny particles act like airport runway lights, illuminating every line, wrinkle, and pore," said model Lauren Hutton, via Marie Claire.

4. Over contouring and over shading. "There's a lot of volume loss with age," plastic surgeon Haideh Hirmand said. "Between ages 25 and 35, women have lost their baby fat and have grown into their looks." Instead of contouring, it's better to highlight and use pale hues on the brows and cheeks.

5. Wearing the wrong lipstick shade. The definition on your lips fades with age, so pick a shade that will emphasize fullness. Dark lipstick will only make lips look plumped, without the definition. But if you still like wearing berry or wine shades, pick a sheer formula, or apply gloss. Stay away from matte, according to Elle Magazine.
