Leonardo DiCaprio's production company Appian Way is partnering with Paramount Pictures to produce a movie about the Volkswagen emissions scandal, according to Variety.

The "dieselgate" scandal boils down to Volkswagen installing software in its engines that cheated fuel emissions tests. Basically, during daily driving conditions the emission control software was off and the beloved V-Dub emitted nitrogen oxide levels beyond the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. Too much nitrogen oxide can cause smog and has been linked to asthma and lung diseases, reported Carbuzz.

Volkswagen is currently facing up to $18 billion in fines from the EPA, noted the Daily Mail.

Writer Jack Ewing is under contract to write a book on the car scandal, and Paramount Studios already acquired the movie rights to it, according to Carbuzz.

While DiCaprio — an environmentalist who invested in the eco-car company Fisker, according to Variety — will produce the film through his Appian Way production company. Whether he will star in it or not is not known at this time.
