There was a time when freckles were considered unattractive dark spots appearing like ugly blemishes on the skin. Women used to take pains covering freckles up, but with today's ever-evolving beauty trends, freckles are now considered a beauty trait.

The skin condition naturally develops more prominently during summer because of sun exposure, but some people have freckles due to genes. "Although [freckles] are usually triggered by the sun, they will only form in those who are genetically pre-disposed to them," said Dr. Howard Murad, regarded as the father of skincare, according to Today.

However, some women attempt to "develop" freckles with the help of makeup, which can be "worn" even when it's no longer bright and sunny outside. In fact, it's becoming a favorite beauty trend and has been around for over a year, according to Hello Giggles.

"Freckles instantly make the complexion look fresh, as if you have no foundation on," said Sarah Lucero from Stila, via Elle. "It's a beauty trick I use more often than you may think. If your foundation or powder looks cake-y, pop a few freckles on top. It will fool everyone into thinking you just have gorgeous, perfect skin, and that you're not wearing much makeup."

The popularity of fake freckles peaked a few months ago when model Kendall Jenner shared her photo on Instagram with freckles drawn on her face.

If you're interested in achieving this look, here's how to go about it:

1. Pick a lighter pencil eyeliner, such as brown, to use.

2. When you're finished with putting on foundation, carefully dab the eyeliner on the apples of your cheeks and nose.

3. Finish it off by lightly dabbing powder with your fingers.
