Ed Sheeran, who has written songs on for three of One Directions four previous albums including "Moments, "Little Things" and "18," now says that the band simply does not need his help anymore, according to TIME.

"They've gotten to a point where they know how to write songs," Sheeran told MTV. "Harry was 16 when I first met him ... but now he's 21 and has written with everyone in the world and learned how to write songs, so they don't really need as much help anymore. They can kind of do their own thing."

Sheeran told MTV that "18," his contribution that One Directions album "Four," was originally written for himself.

"I was in Denmark and I wrote it in my hotel bathroom and I was like, 'This sounds like a One Direction song,'" he said. "And I emailed it to them, and they were like, 'I really like it,' so it wasn't even me having to write a song. It was just like, I'll see what they think."

Sheeran was recently announced as the host of the MTV European Music Awards along with "Orange is the New Black" star Ruby Rose. The 25-year-old singer said he was "so happy" to host the show, which was announced to take place in Milan, Italy on Oct. 29.
