Some articles ago, I discussed the lack of love big men get in NBA video games. They aren’t used that much by the causal gamer and their potential effectiveness can go unnoticed. However, gamers may not be the only ones who don’t give big men the respect they deserve. Is it possible the ratings czars are also guilty of ignoring the guys who play around the rim?

Let’s look at a couple of the big men ratings released for “NBA 2K14”

Marc Gasol—82

Roy Hibbert—81

Brook Lopez—81

Pau Gasol—81

As of right now, these are some of the best centers (and one power forward) in the league. So why are their ratings this low? If you compare their ratings to certain guards in the game, some questions can be raised. Iman Shumpert has the same rating as Marc Gasol at 82. With Dwight Howard injured last season, Marc Gasol was in the conversation for best center in the NBA. I’m pretty sure Iman Shumpert has never been in the conversation for best shooting guard in the league. So why do they share the same rating? Is it because Gasol can’t cross someone at the top of the key and hit a stepback three? So what! He’s an excellent rebounder, finishes extremely well around the rim, can hit the mid-range jumper and is one of the best playmakers out of the paint. I understand that I’m not a ratings czar but I don’t get how that translates to a rating lower than Iman Shumpert.

Hopefully, this is something the developers take a look at for “NBA 2K15.”
