A couple from Dezhou, China got into an argument that eventually led to the man biting off - and eating - his wife's nose after she opted to not answer his calls.

The two had allegedly gotten into a fight because she was too tired to answer her estranged husband's calls after a late work shift on Sept. 6, reported the Mirror. Enraged, the man confronted his wife the next day and the two got into a heated argument. At some point during the fight, he attacked her, bit off her nose, and then ate it.

Recounting the incident, the woman, identified only as Yang, told reporters: "And the next thing I knew, he pushed my head towards the way and ate my nose in one go."

Doctors who examined Yang after the incident, noted that the damage was so severe that she would require "extensive surgery." Almost her entire nose, including the nasal septum, soft triangle and nose tip, were eaten, according to The Independent. They believe that it will be at least three months before the surgery can be done.

Local news reports indicate that the two had marriages prior to this one before meeting one another. The man, who has two grown children from the previous marriage, separated from his wife after he attempted to sell their child so she could care for his grandchildren. Despite this, Yang claims that he calls her regularly, according to NDTV.

Police are allegedly working to locate the husband, who remains at large.
