A woman from Arizona confessed to drowning her 2-year-old twin sons in a bathtub at her home on Sunday and also tried to do the same to a third child, authorities revealed.

Mireya Lopez, 22, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. A motive as to why she wanted to kill her children remains unclear.

"She was very open and honest with our investigators that she did it," said Sgt. Brandon Busse, the spokesperson for the Avondale Police Department, according to Reuters.

Family members found the twin boys submerged in the bathtub at a home in Avondale, Ariz. around noon. A family member then contacted 911.

Police and fire responders arrived on the scene to find the twin boys laid on a bed unresponsive.

Lopez admitted to drowning both of her twin boys on purpose and said she tried to drown a third child but was prevented from doing so by family members before she could harm the child, Busse said in a statement, according to USA Today.

Responders attempted to revive the twins to no avail. They were immediately brought to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead at 1 p.m., according to the New York Daily News.
