A MiG- 21 fighter jet belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in the fields of Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district on Monday during a "routine" training exercise, according to NDTV.

The jet had taken off from an airfield in Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, located approximately 14 km (8.7 miles) from the crash site. The pilot of the aircraft managed to eject from the plane safely moments before the crash and was later airlifted by an Army helicopter.

"A MiG-21 Bison of IAF crashed in Soibugh area of Budgam district at around 10.59 a.m., but there was no loss of life reported in the incident," said Defense Spokesman Colonel SD Goswami, according to India Today.

A court of inquiry has been ordered to determine what caused the crash, added Goswami.

In June, a similar incident took place when a Jaguar fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed near Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh while on a routine training excursion, as HNGN previously reported.
