"Rowdy" Roddy Piper passed away last month and his cause of death has now been determined, TMZ reported. The WWE star died from a blood clot in his lungs.

The WWE Hall of Famer had a pulmonary embolism in his lungs that triggered a heart attack, according to a copy of the death certificate obtained by TMZ. The document also stated that Piper suffered from hypertension which resulted in chronic high blood pressure.

Pulmonary embolisms are a blockage of the pulmonary arteries in the lungs, mostly in the form of blood clots that travel from the legs or other parts of the body to the lungs, according to Mayo Clinic. Cancer increases the risk of pulmonary embolisms.

He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2006, but he was declared cancer-free in November, the Washington Post reported.

Piper passed away at his home in Hollywood on July 31, as previously reported by HNGN. He died in his sleep at 61 years old. WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon paid tribute to Piper's legacy in a statement after his death.

"Roddy Piper was one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE," McMahon said in the statement released by the WWE, "beloved by millions of fans around the world."
