The son of deposed former Libyan leader, Colonel Moammar Gadhafi, has been sentenced to death by a Libyan court for killings committed during the country's 2011 uprising, according to the Associated Press.

Seif al-Islam has been held in Zintan, in northwestern Libya, by a militia group since his 2011 capture, and the group refused to hand him over to the country's central government. He was sentenced to death along with eight others, including former Libyan spy chief Abdullah al Senoussi, according to NBC.

He was not present at the trial and will now face death by firing squad, according to CNN. He was charged with killing protesters and attempting to suppress the 2011 uprising.

Gadhafi was overthrown and killed in 2011, and Libya has since been in chaos with no real central government.

Seif al-Islam is also wanted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity.
