Islamic State's masked executioner, Jihadi John, has reportedly fled the jihadist group-controlled territories and fears for his own life, media reports said.

Twenty-six-year-old British jihadist Mohammed Emwazi, known as "Jihadi John," has gone on the run from the Islamic State militants and reportedly joined a little known jihadist group in Syria, according to Russia Today.

"The militants will drop Emwazi like a stone or worse if they feel he is no longer of any use to them. So it is possible he will end up suffering the same fate as his victims," a source told Express.

He is said to have been terrified by the publicity when he was unmasked as the executer of western hostages, according to Mirror.  Emwazi fears being hunted down by U.S. and British Special Forces in Syria and Iraq.

Emwazi, who was featured in several beheading videos, became one of Britain's most wanted terrorists after executing British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning and American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff.

The last video that the Jihadi John was featured in depicted the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto in January, according to Daily Mail. Jihadi John's identity as Emwazi was revealed by The Washington Post and the BBC in February this year, but, British authorities say they have not confirmed it yet.

The Kuwait-born Emwazi was raised in London and graduated with a degree in computer science from the University of Westminster.

"He used to dress like a gangster rapper. He smoked drugs, drank and was violent towards other boys. The fact he portrays himself as a strict Muslim is laughable and shameful," a former friend told Express.
