A two-year-old black labrador mix named Adam had a rare condition - he was allergic to humans - and it nearly killed him. Owners Beth Weber and Robin Herman of the Lucky Dog Retreat in Indianapolis said that the dog was in bad shape and faced being euthanized before veterinarians discovered what was wrong.

Animal doctors determined that Adam was suffering from an autoimmune disease that triggered an allergic reaction to almost everything he encountered, including human dander, Fox News reportedHe was diagnosed with pemphigus foliaceus, a disorder where the body develops "a self-allergy to the glue that holds his skin cells together," a veterinary dermatologist said, according to ABC News.

"His immune system was so low; he just couldn't fight off any of the allergies. He was almost becoming allergic to everything, including himself," Herman said.

People from the Lucky Dog Retreat were forced to keep Adam's head in a cone at all times. A vet whipped up a serum for the pup's allergy shots, which used proteins of the allergen to slowly teach the dog's immune system to get used to human.

Today, Adam is well and healthy. He even loves to play and loves human contact, The Dodo reported.
