Walking a cat on a leash as a way to let them experience nature is a good move, said Sherry Woodard, a longtime animal behavior consultant at Best Friends Animal Society.

Cats will find great pleasure in spending time outside. Like dogs, walking cats on a leash will also develop a stronger bond between cat and owner. Although not all cats will want to walk on a leash, every cat should be given the opportunity since it will enrich their life.

"A lot of cats love to go outside and smell things, see things and roll around in sand and grass and dirt. They love to scratch real trees. Those are things they can do on a walk," Woodard said, according to Huffington Post. She also added that it will make cats brighter as it allows them to think more.

The cats will also feel confident and comfortable in their day-to-day life, and is even said to transform a scaredy-cat into a cool cat.

Indoor training is necessary so the cat will be accustomed to having a strap around its body. Treats should be provided during the training process. Before heading outside, the cat needs to be comfortable with the harness. It is recommended to start outdoor walks in a fenced and sheltered area with less stimuli to avoid overwhelming the cat, said the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

By the time your cat loves the outdoors, they might attempt to escape when the door is open. Woodard said that pet owners should make it clear that the only time he or she can go outside is when he is dressed in the harness.

What if your cat doesn't show interest in the outdoors? Try different alternatives like having a catio, which is an enclosed outdoor space where your cat can walk around freely. The space could also help build the connection between cat and owner.
