Massachusetts authorities continue to question New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez in connection with the homicide of an “associate” of Hernandez, according to ABC News. Investigators say they are looking to execute a search warrant for a rental car with Rhode Island found near the 27-year old homicide victim’s body. The rental car belonged to Hernandez but he is no longer believed to be a suspect.
Police and prosecutors searched the tight end’s more than 5,000 square foot home Tuesday. Hernandez has been cooperating with police after initially not showing cooperation to the authorities.
New England Patriots official Stacey James released a statement on the team’s behalf.
"I am aware of the reports, but I do not anticipate that we will be commenting publicly during an ongoing police investigation," he said.
Today, state troopers searched two sides of the road near the street where Hernandez lives.
The body found near Hernandez’s house belonged to Odin Lloyd, a line backer for the Boston Bandits. The Bandits are a semi-pro football team.
Lloyd was shot in the head according to ABC who cited sources. According to the sources, Lloyd’s body was found near John Dietsch Boulevard in a clearing. The police found the Enterprise rental registered to Hernandez, not too far from Lloyd’s body.
Athletes First, the agency that represents Hernandez, offered no comment on the situation. When Hernandez’s mother was contact she said she did not know her son was involved in an investigation.
On the field, Hernandez has had 175 catches for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns in 38 games. He did not play in 10 games in the 2012 season due to an ankle injury. He had shoulder surgery in April and is expected to be ready in time for training camp.
However, with this investigation and a lawsuit from a man claiming Hernandez shot him in the face, the tight-end returning to the field may be up in the air.
