Pennsylvania Murder Fugitive On The Run For 30 Years Finally Caught

Law enforcement finally apprehended a Texas man who was on the run for shooting and killing a man in a Pennsylvania parking lot over 30 years ago.

Joseph Lewis Miller, a 78-year-old church deacon, was arrested by U.S. Marshals at his home in Mineola on Monday, KETK TV reported. The suspect was arrested without resistance, waived his Miranda right and copped to the murder. Miller, who has a previous murder conviction, was charged with four felonies, including murder and crimes committed with a fire arm.

"The murder occurred more than three decades ago, and while this case presented us with a significant challenge it also exemplifies the dedication, thoroughness and diligence the fugitive task force has toward cold cases," U.S. Marshal Martin J. Pane said according to the station.

Miller is accused of fatally shooting Thomas Waller on Jan. 15, 1981 in a parking lot next to the Times Hotel in Dauphin County. During that time, Miller was already on lifetime state parole under the Pennsylvania Board of Probation after serving a nearly 12-year prison sentence for an unrelated murder. He was released in 1971, KETK TV reported.

Miller avoided arrest by living under the alias of Roy Eugene Eubanks, a deacon at a local church. The suspect, who had a wife, also received Social Security disability checks under the Eubanks name. Miller was arrested after U.S. Marshals surveilled his home. Authorities say the wife had no knowledge that her husband was wanted for murder.

Miller will remain in the custody of Wood County, Texas, pending a decision to extradite him to Pennsylvania.

"Miller's arrest today is a great example of the perseverance of the Board's parole agents," Michael C. Potteiger, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole, said according to the station. "Today's arrested should send a message- if you are on the run, we will find you."
