Last year, the Arizona's Veteran Hall of Fame honored an esteemed member of staff from University of Phoenix. Retired Command Sergeant Major John Ramirez is the dean of operations for the University's College of Doctoral Studies. Ramirez entered Arizona's Veteran Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2020.

"University of Phoenix congratulates John Ramirez for this recognition that honors his distinguished military career and his selfless commitment to serving others," said Brian Ishmael, vice president, Office of Military and Veteran Affairs and Strategic Government Partnerships, University of Phoenix.

"He has demonstrated a commitment to service - first proudly serving our nation in the United States Army and now continuing to assist veterans who are transitioning back to civilian life. John is both an admired member of the University's staff and a revered leader in the Phoenix community."

Before working at the University, Ramirez served in the U.S. military for 27 years. During that time, he held a variety of high positions in the service including that of Command Sergeant Major. Additionally, he was on the committee for the U.S. Army's Special Executive Review Board for the Center for Strategic Leadership.

This is not the first time that Ramirez has received a notable honor of this nature. In 2004, he was named one of the 'Top Hispanic Leaders' in the Army. His resume is remarkably impressive, showcasing his many achievements and experiences. He holds a Sergeant Major of the Army William Bainbridge Ethics Award and is a graduate from the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.

Ramirez earned his master's degree in Administration of Justice and Security/Global Homeland Security from University of Phoenix. He joined the University as a staff member in 2004 and has since held various roles. He now holds the acclaimed position of dean of operations for the College of Doctoral Studies.

Aside from his professional role at the University, Ramirez holds positions within community organizations. He dedicates much of his energy into helping, supporting and mentoring young Latino students and professionals. He is passionate about fostering the talent of the future. Thanks to his ongoing efforts, he received the Association of Latino Professionals for America Veteran of the Year Award in 2016.

His latest honor with the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame recognizes Ramirez's remarkable contributions after his military career. The society includes astounding individuals who have made post-military contributions to either their local community or on a state or national level. The Arizona Hall of Fame Society says that it blends "together the unique backgrounds and talents of Veterans who have been recognized for their outstanding efforts and achievements to our communities outside of their military service."

Recognized by the governor of Arizona and the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services, the program is an annual celebration of exceptional individuals. The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame started back in 2001, making Ramirez a member of the 20th class of veterans. Needless to say, this is a huge honor and achievement.

The Arizona Hall of Fame Society is planning an Induction Ceremony for the class of 2020. Currently, the society has scheduled the event for October 2021. In the meantime, team members have held individual induction ceremonies across three locations: Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tuscan. The smaller events took place in February 2021.
