The NFL's first openly gay football player, Michael Sam, announced his split from fiancé Vito Cammisano just six months after announcing their engagement, reported Us Weekly. The couple called off their engagement before setting a date.

Sam, 25, announced his return to Canadian football team Montreal Alouettes Monday after a two-week hiatus for undisclosed personal reasons, according to the New York Daily News. But problems with his relationship look like they could be to blame for Sam's leave of absence.

A source close to the athlete confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple broke off their engagement, citing problems in the relationship.

"They've been rocky for months," the source said, according to Us Weekly.

In a video on ex-fiancé Cammisano's Instagram page announcing his upcoming vlog, he isn't wearing his engagement ring. He told his followers, "And I also want to talk about some issues that I might be having," which could allude to his breakup with Sam.

Meanwhile, Sam reportedly wiped out his Instagram of all photos with Cammisano, including the photo that announced their engagement six months ago. Cammisano still has photos of Sam on his Instagram page, including the famous shot of the kiss they shared in celebration after Sam was drafted to the NFL.

Sam is wasting no time getting back on the field after his breakup though, according to the Daily News. He returned to Montreal Monday and has the support of his coach, Tom Higgins.

"He worked some things out that he needed to settle and he came back to us a much more dedicated athlete than he was before," Higgins told the Daily News. "He wants to prove that he can play on a high level."

 Wow.What a day. On cloud 9. So proud and happy! #stl #rams #draft @mikeysam52
