A U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in Texas Friday after it was fired upon.

The aircraft was flying around the Rio Grande close to the far northwest corner of border city Laredo at around 5 p.m. when shots were suddenly fired.

Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said that two shots out of five hit the helicopter. Sara Melendez, the spokesperson for the Border Patrol, said that the helicopter managed to land safely and there were no reports of injuries, the Laredo Morning Times reported.

The area that the Border Patrol helicopter was flying around is highly infamous for illegal border crossings and the smuggling of narcotics.

The Laredo Police, who were called immediately after the shooting took place, said preliminary investigations show that the gunshots came from the Mexico side of the border.

Joe Baeza, the spokesperson for the Laredo Police, said that cross border shooting incidents are a rarity, even though the hearing of gunshots is never unusual, according to CNN.

The Laredo Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are currently sorting out the shooting situation.
