John Kerry has injured his leg in a bike crash in Scionzier, France, forcing him to put his four-nation trip around Europe to a halt.

The U.S. secretary of state is now planning to make his return to the United States after x-rays at a Swiss hospital revealed that he had fractured his right femur and will receive further treatment in Boston, according to the Associated Press.

John Kirby, the spokesperson of the State Department, said that Kerry will be treated by the same doctor who treated him for a hip injury he suffered in the past.

Kirby added that Kerry is stable and had never been unconscious. He also stressed that the injury is non-threatening.

"Paramedics and a physician were on the scene with the Secretary's motorcade at the time of the accident" Kirby said, CNN reported.

Kerry was transported by a medical helicopter to the University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland. The accident took place near Scionzier, which is located in the southern part of France.

An avid cyclist, Kerry was having a bike ride on Sunday after having negotiations with the Iranian foreign minister, Bloomberg reported. He was scheduled to fly to Madrid on the same day.
