The latest Twitter craze has thousands of users amused and pre-occupied, as people try and summon a Mexican demon named Charlie, in what has been described as an Ouija-board-style ritual, according to News Corp Australia.

Participants of the Charlie Charlie Challenge position two pencils to form a cross and then set these on a paper, which has the words "yes" and "no" written on each of the quadrant. The participants then ask, "Charlie, Charlie, are you here?" and wait until the pencil "points" to "yes" before proceeding to ask more questions.

All questions may only be answered with a yes or a no and in order to tap out of the game, participants must politely ask Charlie to stop, so that the demon's portal is not left open for other demons to potentially wreak havoc.

Those who join have usually asked questions about relationships, but the trend has also become a hit with Justin Bieber and One Direction fandoms, who mostly seek Charlie for questions relating to their favorite celebrities.

Meanwhile, those who have done the challenge were initially told that the demon is friendly, but he may also have "sinister plans," according to a report from the BBC.

"Some kids have talked about strange things happening after playing this game, like seeing shadows or hearing a child's laughter," according to Pencils.com. "Others didn't experience anything at all," the report adds.

But while the religious aren't amused, the challenge is still trending on Twitter and has already spawned several memes and parodies.
