Sweden has been declared the winner of the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest held in Austria after having scored 365 points.

The country's representative, Swedish popstar Måns Zelmerlöw, won the entire competition, defeating 26 other countries with the original song "Heroes," according to a report from CNN.

Zelmerlöw said he felt overwhelmed about the win, telling presenters he expected that representatives from Russia or Italy would walk away with the award.

"But then I did it, and I was so happy. My feelings are now all over the place. I am so proud, so excited, so full of joy," he said, after being handed the trophy by last year's winner, Austria's Conchita Wurst.

Russia and Italy placed second and third respectively. Polina Gagarina represented Russia while Italy had II Volo.

First time participant Australia greatly impressed the European crowds. They were represented by 2003 Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian, who sang "Tonight Again." He eventually placed 5th, right behind Belgium's Loïc Nottet.

Although the event that has been mostly exclusive to European countries, Australia was invited to perfrom by host country Austria.

Sweden was considered the frontrunner at the start of the competition, according to a report from USA Today.

This marks the sixth time that Sweden has won the annual European festivity, with Zelmerlöw joining past winners such as ABBA in 1974, the most famous winner to come out of the yearly event.
