The Duchess of Cambridge's uncle Gary Goldsmith - Carole Middleton's only brother - said he was playing tennis when he heard the good news about his new grand-niece.

"I came off court to my phone inbox full of well wishers and congratulations texts," Goldsmith told the Daily Mail. "That was the first time I learnt we have another little girl in the family. It's great news and I think that is what the whole nation wanted to hear - the perfect addition to the perfect couple."

"I can only imagine how excited Carole and Mike, Pip and James must be," Goldsmith added, "let alone William and Kate. George will now be a big brother as well as a future king. Won't he have his hands full growing up?"

The princess is the first girl to be born in his family in 13 years. He plans to celebrate the arrival at his local pub in Marylebone, West London.

"We will definitely be going out with our friends to wet the baby's head," Goldsmith told the Daily Mail. "Fingers crossed Chelsea win the league and then we can really celebrate. Perhaps I should go and buy a Lottery ticket? I'm having such a good day, I will surely win."

Goldsmith is a millionaire recruitment consultant and James Middleton's godfather. As HNGN previously reported, he said that if royal baby number two wasn't a girl, it would be OK as the duke and duchess plan to have more than two!

Goldsmith celebrated his 50th birthday last weekend with a Mods and Rockers party where, according to the Daily Mail, he said, "If the new princess is anything like her mother, she will be a really placid baby. Kate didn't give Carole and Mike any trouble."

"Kate and Pippa were genuinely fun kids," Goldsmith recalled. "I remember having water fights with them and playing rough and tumble and they were quite happy to get soaking wet."
