Emma the calf was left for dead after she was hit by a car in Utah, but the tough cow is making a great recovery with the help of Farm Sanctuary.

Emma was found lying on the side of the road, immobile by Rachel Nyborg, who neighbors the farm where the calf lives.

Nyborg told Farm Sanctuary that Emma's farmer wasn't planning on getting her the help she needs because a calf with a broken leg isn't very useful (financially) to a farmer who is just looking to profit off their animal's milk and meat.

Rachel contacted a local veterinarian and the Farm Sanctuary who both assisted her in legally getting Emma the help she needed to survive.

Emma's vets ruled that amputating her leg would be the safest way to get the calf back to living life as normal as possible.

The surgery was successful, besides a non-life threatening infection.

A physical therapist is working with Emma so she can learn to walk on three legs. Once the infection clears up she will get fitted for a prosthetic leg.

"It all seems like quite a big challenge for a little calf, but this Emma has a whole lot of heart," Farm Sanctuary officials said about Emma. "She is bright and in high spirits. Cattle raised out on the range for beef are typically frightened of humans, but having been through so much with her human friends already, Emma is trusting and friendly. Life with three legs? Bring it on. Emma is ready."
