This superhero dog and his Afghanistan army partner make the perfect friends because they both saved each other's lives.

While U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald was deployed with her sidekick Layka, a trained military dog, the pup was shot with "about four to six controlled rounds," reported ABC News.

He said Layka "definitely saved my life that night."

Layka had multiple surgeries when she received veterinary treatment, which ended in her right paw getting amputated.

Now that they are both out of the war, Layka is being cared for by McDonald.

"I realized I had a responsibility to take care of her, just as she took care of me," McDonald told ABC News. "She saved our lives and I owed it to her to obviously save hers."

The pair still spend their days training at McDonald's house, which is a form of therapy for both of them. In their free time, they spend time with McDonald's son, Liam, who quickly became best friends with Layka.
