On Thursday, HNGN passed along news that Erica Kinsman, the former Florida State student who had brought sexual assault allegations against 2015 NFL Draft hopeful and former Seminole quarterback Jameis Winston, had filed suit in Florida against Winston.

Friday, Winston's attorney David Cornwell responded with a statement regarding the lawsuit.

"This stunt was expected," Cornwell said in the statement, via Pro Football Talk. "[The accuser's] false accusations have already been exposed and rejected six times. This time will be no different. Mr. Winston welcomes the opportunity to clear his name with the truth.

"Mr. Winston is looking forward to the upcoming draft. He will not permit this ploy to distract him as he begins the journey of fulfilling his lifelong dream of being a championship quarterback in the National Football League."

As PFT notes, Cornwell has, in the past, suggested that a counterclaim was possible if Kinsman actually filed suit.

Winston has not been arrested or charged in connection with the allegations and was cleared by Florida State after a lengthy proceeding to determine whether or not he had violated the university's code of conduct.

Winston is widely presumed to become the selection of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the first-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft later this month. It remains to be seen how the NFL, a league hell-bent on revamping it's image after a plethora of domestic violence issues last season, responds to Winston's continued legal problems.
