While Google Glass is considered by many to be a technical failure for Google, it hasn't discouraged other tech companies from trying to create the next pair of augmented reality glasses that will let people wear their screens on their eyes. The latest venture into this field is Sony's SmartEyeglass.

Sony announced on Tuesday that the developer version of SmartEyeglass is now available for preorder. Customers can preorder a device for $850. The device is expected to ship in March.

The SmartEyeglass looks like a fairly thick-rimmed version of most glasses. However, the device also contains a 3-megapixel camera, a light sensor and a small display that can provide basic updates and information to the user. The glass also comes with a wired controller that holds an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and microphone. Users can clip the device onto their clothing or store it in a pocket.

It's unclear if this device will succeed on the market, or how long until the EyeSmartEyeglass will reach wide distribution. Many key figures in the tech world have stated their opposition to smart glass technology, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Apple Marketing Chief Phil Schiller. On top of that, the public response  to Google Glass was fairly negative.
