An Indiana woman will spend the next two years behind bars for ripping her ex-boyfriend's scrotum after he ended their relationship, prosecutors said.

Christina Lorena Reber was sentenced to two years in prison for the March 2012 assault that caused her ex "an extraordinarily heinous injury" and "changed the victim's life," Delaware Circuit Court Judge Marianne Vorhees said, according to The Muncie Star Press.

Reber's unnamed ex-boyfriend, 59, needed stitches and reconstructive surgery as a result of the attack at his home.

Before delivering the sentence, Vorhees had the option of placing the 46-year-old under house arrest, the newspaper reported. But upon further deliberation, the judge decided prison was warranted in part because she did not believe Reber felt fully responsible for what happened.

Instead of seeking help, Reber "walked out the door" and "left him there bleeding," Vorhees said.

The defendant claimed her former boyfriend, who had recently ended their relationship, attacked her the day of the incident.

"That was the only thing she could think of to grab," her attorney Zaki Ali said of the victim's scrotum.

But prosecutor Eric Hoffman said there were "other parts" she could have chosen, the Muncie Star Press reported. "She chose the victim's genitals," Hoffman said.

The victim said he still experiences frequent pain.

"It's uncomfortable," he said during testimony at Reber's trial. His ex-girlfriend told the judge she hopes he can forgive her.

"My hope for (the victim) is that he will be able to accept an apology from me," Reber said according to the newspaper. Reber added she wants him to live on with "wholeness and peace."
