Ashley Gardner, the woman whose shocked picture went viral after she learned she was carrying quadruplets last fall, gave birth to four healthy babies Monday morning via Caesarean section.
The smallest baby was just less than two pounds, while the other three were born at more than two pounds, according to a Facebook post on Gardner and her husband's Facebook page, A Miracle Unfolding-Gardner Quadruplets.
Gardner and her husband Tyson spent eight years unsuccessfully trying to have children, reported ABC 7. The couple tried several unsuccessful methods of getting pregnant before turning to in-vitro fertilization, which worked - even better than expected.
Ashley, 27, has endometriosis, which is a condition where the lining of the uterus (womb) grows outside of the uterus, reported Yahoo! News. In some cases, like Ashley's, the condition makes it harder to get pregnant.
When the couple underwent the in-vitro fertilization, two embryos were implanted in Ashley's uterus. Both the embryos split, leading her to carry two sets of identical twins - or quadruplets, reported Yahoo! News.
In natural birth, having two sets of identical twins from different placentas occurs about one in 70 million times, Dr. Alan Penzias of Harvard Medical School told ABC 7.
The four babies - Indie, Esme, Scarlett and Evangeline - were delivered by doctors 12 weeks early after Ashley ruptured some membranes and her contractions continued to progress in intensity, the family told ABC 7.
No pictures of the babies were released yet. The premature babies are still under breathing masks and Ashley is resting after being awake for 48 hours, according to the couple's Facebook page.
