Rumors are spreading that Google is gearing up to announce the latest incarnation of the Android Operating system sometime in October, according to a source at VR Zone.

Previous rumors were that Google would be releasing a stop-gap Android 4.3 Jelly Bean in order to give OEMs a bit more breathing room to develop. The latest news believes the delay is over and Google is gearing up to unveil the latest version to the public. Reports say Sony already has its hands on the new operating system since they're a contributor. It's still likely that a 4.3 version of Jelly Bean will arrive first.

Android OS 5.0, also known as Key Lime Pie, is expected to be unveiled sometime in October and be available on the next generation of smartphones that use the Android operating system.

The source told VR Zone that Android 5.0 will be optimized to run on lower end devices that have a minimum of 512 MB or RAM, something that hasn't happened since 2010's Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and is something that Apple's iOS and Windows phones are already able to do.

With devices like the Samsung Galazy S4 and the HTC One Google Edition being such popular and successful phones for their respective brands, the world's most popular operating system is now even more in the spotlight than ever. There're very few details about what exactly Google will be optimizing for the newest Android OS but it will likely carry on their tradition of innovative and efficient functionality that Android users enjoy so much.

Google has yet to confirm this report but everything about it, including the timing on the release, seems to add up to the way that Android has unveiled new operating systems in the past.

VR Zone also suggests the expected launch date of the new operating system coincides very well with the expected unveiling of the Motorola X smartphone. That handset is likely to launch with advanced sensors that make it aware of what is happening around it as well as LTE support. It wouldn't be out of bounds to think that this might be the first smartphone to debut with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.
