Aside from sucking out the true essence of friendships, Facebook now seems to be causing physical fights over mere friend requests.

A 27-year-old woman was arrested after she was accused of slapping a 72-year-old woman multiple times in the face for not accepting her friend request on Facebook.

Rachel Anne Hayes, of Clearwater, Fla., was arrested Thursday morning after she assaulted her grandmother during an argument over a Facebook friend request, The Tampa Bay Times reported. She has been charged with aggravated battery on an elderly person.

On Wednesday, Hayes confronted her grandmother at her Seminole home, Pinellas Sheriff's deputies said. When her grandmother admitted that the 27-year-old's inappropriate user name on the social networking website was the reason behind denying the friend request on Facebook, Hayes became extremely upset.

However the 72-year-old told Hayes that if she changed the name, which was not revealed by authorities, she would accept the request. But Hayes refused and walked out of the house, the Associated Press reported.

A short time later, Hayes returned and started an argument at the front door of the house, deputies said, adding that Hayes was able to slap her grandmother several times before she could get back inside and lock the door.

By the time deputies responded, Hayes had already left the home. But later on, she was arrested on a felony charge of domestic battery on an elderly person, Clearwater deputies said.

According to an arrest affidavit, the 27-year-old was under the influence of alcohol.

Hayes has been arrested three times before, according to Pinellas County Jail records. The first was for a DUI, the second for a violation of probation for DUI and the last for disorderly conduct, or urinating, according to New York Daily News.

On Thursday, Hayes was being held in the Pinellas County Jail without bond, and it's unknown whether she has an attorney.
